Appraisal / Inspection
'50s racing California

I have scores of photos of roadracing in Southern California. I'll add a few every week with stories. I'll try to edit these in the future to save space.
=========================================

Lou Brero driving his C-Jag at Torrey Pines in either 1953 or '54. He was a lumberman from Arcata, California and a very good driver. He was killed in a race in Hawaii when a part failed in a V8 Chevy powered A6GCS Maserati.

Caroll Shelby driving Lou Brero's 4.5 Ferrari at Torrey Pines in 1955. The same car that, when white and blue, Phil Hill drove in the Carrera PanAmericana for George Tilp. The later history of this car is very strange. I'll add more later.

Ignacio Lozano, Publisher of La Opinion and Ambassador to Mexico, drives the Marzotto Ferrari 212 at Torrey in
1954.
The car had a perfectly round radiator opening. Ugly!

 Harrison Evans' XK120 coupe leads Keenan Wynn's Alfa P3 biposto. I pitted for Harrison in his  XK12o, C-type Jag and Ferrari 750 Monza. He was an international geologist and possible prototype for "Indiana Jones."

The 120 at Santa Barbara.

The C-Type at Hansen Dam.

Ken Miles' Gough Industries MG-TF 1500 was pure Q-Ship. A silhouette car designed to beat OSCAs before the R-1. He used to drive me, before I got my license, to CSCC tech inspection, where I tinkled pens along wire wheels to find loose spokes. I was surprised by how cautiously he drove on the street. He said, "Unless you know and have observed the drivers around you, assume that they are complete idiots and will do the worst thing possible." I adopted that.

Miles in the Troutman-Barnes Spl. at Santa Barbara. Originally with a flathead, then a Chevy V-8. Great handling and workmanship from the pair who built the Scarab and Chapparal. I'd had many photos of the R-1 and R-2, Parravano cars and RRR, but they and my pre-1961 trophies were stolen in a burglary of my parents home.
==========================================

Porfirio Rubirosa at Santa Barbara in the Mondial. Zsa Zsa was standing to the side, and yes, she had shades and a black eye.

Johnny Von Neumann driving a very early Porsche 550 Spyder at Torrey Pines. Both my brother and I drove this car on Sunset, but Otto Zipper got it up to 122 on the straight east of Beverly Glen with a terrified me gripping the cowl.

Peter Lovely in the Pooper. A Porsche powered Cooper ex-Bonneville car.

I pose in Johnny Ysmael's 2.6 Ferrari at Ernie McAffee's Cahuenga shop in 1954

With Temple Buell's 105 Abarth. Torrey Pines 1954.
